Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
TL;DR

On October 15, 2026, Google announced five changes to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Links to sources are becoming more visible, a block with official sites is being tested at the top of the answer, and fresh-article carousels are expanding to new countries. Google promises nothing about traffic: the announcement does not say a word about clicks. Measurements so far show the opposite: next to an AI answer, the CTR of position one is about 58% lower. The winners are pages with specifics that a short answer lacks: prices, terms, specifications and original data.

Key facts

  • Google announced five changes to how links are shown, two of them still in testing.
  • The presence of an AI answer correlates with a 58% lower CTR for position one and a 19.4% lower CTR for position ten.
  • After AI Overviews launched in France, impressions did not fall, but CTR did: a median of minus 23.1% in nine days.
  • In September, an AI answer appeared on an average of 73.3% of branded queries in US desktop search.
  • The most frequent external sources in branded AI answers: Wikipedia 71.9%, YouTube 38.6%, LinkedIn 22.8%.
  • Google states plainly that there are no special technical requirements for appearing in AI Overviews.

What exactly did Google change on October 15, 2026?

Five things, and not all of them are live for every user yet. The announcement was published by Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product for Google Search.

ChangeWhat it means for a siteStatus
Links inside the answer appear higher and more oftenA click to the source is possible from the first linesRolling out
A block with official sites at the top of the answerA dedicated spot for the brand’s official pageIn testing
Fresh-article carousels in new countries and languagesMore impressions for media and regular publishersExpanding gradually
Links to further reading with imagesA more visible block at the end of the answerStage not specified by Google
Clickable author and publisher names in videosAn author profile in search, works in AI ModeIn testing

Google also notes that the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown more than 7 times since the start of the year. These are exactly the sources that the article carousels highlight.

Will clicks come back to websites?

Google does not promise that. The announcement says nothing about traffic or clicks. It only talks about how visible sources are.

Measurements so far say otherwise. In an Ahrefs study of 300,000 queries, the presence of an AI answer correlated with a CTR about 58% lower for position one and 19.4% lower for position ten. The authors themselves note that this is a correlation, not a proven cause.

The launch of AI Overviews in France gave another snapshot. In the first nine days, sites with a high share of AI answers saw their median CTR drop by 23.1%, and 82.2% of those sites lost CTR. Impressions did not decline. In other words, visibility stayed, but clicks went down. These are Ahrefs data from September 16, 2026, based on a sample of 963 French domains.

Who will get the clicks after the update?

Pages that offer what a short answer does not.

  • Official pages with specifics. Prices, terms, timelines, specifications, an order form.
  • Original data and case studies. Numbers, results and comparisons that cannot be retold from other sources.
  • Brands present beyond their own site. On complex topics Google builds the answer from several sources.

Companies that publish regularly now have one more path: ask your audience to add you to their preferred sources. Fresh-article carousels highlight exactly those.

Who risks staying invisible?

Sites whose content can be retold in one paragraph, and brands with outdated data in other people’s sources.

An example. A company sells a CRM. Its site has a “how to choose a CRM” article but no pricing plans, feature comparison or implementation examples. Google will build the answer from other sources, and even a high organic position will not bring a click.

The second risk is clearly visible on branded queries. According to Ahrefs data from October 2, in September an AI answer appeared on an average of 73.3% of branded queries in US desktop search. By the end of the month the figure reached 83%. The most frequent external sources in these answers were Wikipedia at 71.9%, YouTube at 38.6% and LinkedIn at 22.8%. If those sources show an old price or an incomplete list of services, that is exactly what the customer will see.

Do you need to implement anything technical?

No. Google states plainly that there are no special requirements for appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Special schema markup and files for AI are not needed either. The page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

What is actually worth checking:

  • Whether your pages carry nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet directives that block snippets.
  • Whether the main content can be read without JavaScript.
  • Whether the site is open to search crawlers.

How to do this is covered in our step-by-step checklist for getting into ChatGPT answers.

One more detail for reporting. Search Console does not break out AI Overviews and AI Mode data separately: it is included in the overall figures for the Web search type.

What should a business do this week?

  1. Check 20-30 customer queries. See where an AI answer appears, whom it names and which sources it cites. Check queries with your company name separately.
  2. Remove technical restrictions. Indexing, crawler access, snippet permission, content that reads without JavaScript.
  3. Add what people click through for. Prices, terms, timelines, specifications and case studies with numbers instead of a promise of an individual approach.
  4. Fix your data in other people’s sources. Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn, directories, industry media. How external signals fit with everything else is shown in the Haivoronskyi framework.
  5. Add AI mentions to your reports. Rankings and clicks are no longer enough: track how many answers name you and which sources shape them.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Does the update mean organic traffic will come back?

Google did not promise that. The announcement is about how visible links are, not about the number of clicks. The latest measurements show the opposite: next to an AI answer, the CTR of position one is about 58% lower.

Do you need special markup to get into AI Overviews?

No. Google says that neither special schema markup nor special files for AI are required. What you need is indexing and permission to show a snippet.

How do you track clicks from AI Overviews specifically?

There is no separate report. In Search Console these figures are part of the Web search type, so you have to combine search analytics, manual checks of AI answers and conversion tracking on your site.

What are preferred sources and why do they matter for a business?

It is a setting in which users choose the sites whose content they want to see more often. Google says the number of such users has grown more than 7 times since the start of the year, and these are the sources that the new article carousels highlight.
